Sea Scene with galleon, lighthouse and treasure A4 canvas - handpainted mixed media

Sea Scene with galleon, lighthouse and treasure A4 canvas - handpainted mixed media

Hi Craft addicts!

Today's project for Watercolour Wednesday is a canvas I have created using watercolour paints, dies, stamps and alcohol markers...it definitely needs improving as it is my first attempt at a larger composition..

How I made this project:-
  • The first thing I did was to lightly draw in pencil where i wanted the various places to go on a prepared A4 canvas, such as the sand dunes, sea and skyline.
  • I then started on the sky, using various shades of blue Watercolour paints - this time I used Kuretake's Gansai Tambi but any will do... I also added some white, grey and darker blue to give the impression of clouds in the sky.
  • I then used darker blue shades to create the sea, adding a bit of green and white once dry.
  • I also used some black paint to create the land in the distance (this definitely needs work on - but there again so does everything else).
  • Using yellows, oranges and some brown paint, I then added the dunes, defining them with some darker shading.
  • I also added the sun using the same yellow paint.
  • I then decided that it needed some other elements and here is where I can say it is a mixed media piece 😀
  • I took the Galleon stamp from Hunkydory's For the Love of Stamps You're a Treasure set and stamped it directly on to the canvas using Gina K Jet Black ink (it did give it a ghostly effect as it doesn't go on smoothly due to the canvas' texture). I also stamped the anchor from the same set next to the ship and added a bird from Hunkydory's Ahoy Matey set.
  • I also stamped a couple of yachts in black ink on to the sea part of the canvas and some birds just under the sun.
  • I stamped the seaweed from the first set of stamps on to some white stamping card in 2 shades of green from Rare Earth ink cubes and cut them out and glued them to the right hand side of the dunes, I then stamped the crab onto a couple of them.
  • I also stamped out the treasure chest on to some white card in black card and coloured the chest using brown alcohol markers and a yellow one for the coins! I then used some foam pads to stick it to the left of the galleon.
  • I then stamped the lighthouse out onto white card using the Gina K Amalgam ink and coloured it in using red, beige and yellow alcohol markers. I cut it out leaving a narrow white border and added it to the top of the left hand dune.
  • Finally, I die cut the reeds from the Reeds and Bushes die set from Tattered Lace from some paper I had coloured with alcohol inks as it creates a really great effect.
