MDF Butterfly decorated with Acrylic paints - Day 261 of my 365 day challenge
MDF Butterfly decorated with Acrylic paints -
Day 261 of my 365 day challenge
Hi Craft addicts!
I have been playing with Acrylic paints and MDF shapes and this is one of my first attempts which I had great fun making!
How I made this fun project:-
- I first of all cleaned the surface of the MDF Butterfly - am not sure where it is from but it could either be Dreamees or Ali Reeve's Clever Cuts.
- I decided to do a "dirty pour" which is where you add all the colours you want into a pot and add it directly to the project.
- I therefore added the main colour first - which in this case is black Folk Art acrylic paints (these are good as they already have been mixed with a pouring medium to make them easier to pour) into a plastic pot and then added various amounts of Yellow, Blue, Green and a bit of white until I was happy with the colour mix.
- I upturned a plastic cup in a plastic box (to protect your surfaces) and then turned to the butterfly.
- You can just pour the paints directly on to it, or you can place the butterfly over the cup, turn it upside down and before removing the cup put it on the other cup.
- When you have done either, you can then pick up the butterfly and swirl the paints around so that they reach the edge - as you do it you can see the great patterns it creates and it is totally up to you as to how it turns out.
- I decided that I wanted a bit more yellow showing, so added it to the cup and poured it over a couple of places again swirling it so that it merged slightly with the other colours.
- Once I was happy with the colours and design, I placed it back on the upturned pot and left it to dry overnight.
- As the back (and sides) can get a bit messy, I used a black Gesso paint to tidy up them up and again left them to dry.
- The acrylic paint does have a film over it but if you want to give it a shiny surface you could add some varnish or Mod Podge to protect it.
- I also dotted some Gina K Crystalline drops around the butterfly and left that to dry too.
- Finally, I threaded some black narrow ribbon through the holes at the top and attached it to the back with my hot glue gun.
And there you are - a product that is fantastic fun to make and would make a great gift!
